Excellent project for a group of students. Can be done on school premises, public park (Both with permission) or on private property. Project location must be thoughtfully considered, it must have access to storm water, drain water, or roadway runoff. The rain garden allows the water to be naturally filtered and returned to the ground water or (water lenses) beneath the island. Plants selected for the rain garden must be indigenous, deep rooted, and able to with stand both dry and wet climates.

Preparation Instruction:

• Science- (Effects of erosion, pollution from runoff, coral damage from sedimentation).
• English- Essay or report on why this project is important, how, what and why plants were selected, how to build a rain garden or about the harmful effects of runoff and water pollution.
• Math- Math formulas can be used when measuring the area of the garden needed, the depth, and the number of plants needed to fill the area of the garden if each plant was 6-12” apart. For High School Seniors calculations can be more elaborate to show possible water saved by installing a rain garden as opposed to an area without one.
• Chamorro- Research can be done to learn which Taro (and, or) Banana Plants are recommended to grow for a food source. It is important to find the right kind of Taro (and, or) Banana Plants for your rain garden. A report can be written to explain the cultural recipe for these plants.

Coordinate with various partners friends, non-profit organizations, govt agencies, companies... etc
Plant the plants and provide maintenance

Learning Standards/Objectives:

• To stop storm water, or runoff from collecting pollutants from our roads and washing into the ocean. This runoff is often mixed with eroded soil polluting the ocean and killing the coral reefs that surround Guam.
• To empower our residents to do simple projects around their homes and community to help with the larger problem of erosion and water pollution.
