Ideal for individuals or small groups of students. Research work can be primarily online. Find out what the monthly observances are for each month in the year and have students work in groups to find out what the national observances mean and if there are any colors that go with the cause. Prepare specific color ribbons to hand out to your friends and classmates to show your support of a cause. For example: Purple Ribbon – Family Violence Prevention Month (October) This project allows the student to work from home with limited transportation and printing needed. This project aims to help students learn more about the social issues the face our community and what month is dedicated to raising awareness for that issue. Maybe class can get together and provide the school with a suitable calendar of observances to help plan more Service Learning Projects tied to each month.

Preparation Instruction:

• English- Essay or report on the purpose of each monthly observance. What does this observance provide to the community? How can people support the cause? How did completing the project make you feel?
• Health- A report can be done to outline Guam statistics in relation to the monthly observances.
• Social Studies- Emphasize the affects of civic engagement in communities and show how community and grass roots efforts help our communities to address these issues.
• Art Classes- Conduct Art Classes for our members, tie in holidays and monthly observances.

Learning Standards/Objectives:

• To teach students about national and international awareness campaigns. We also want students to know how they can support the cause locally.
• To encourage students to present the information they gathered to help share.
