HOW IT WORKS

Students

Projects that you can participate in are posted on this website.
These projects have been approved by the website staff in concert with the Guam Department of Education Service Learning Committee.
You can search for projects that interest you or that are available to you at your school.
You will then contact the project contributor directly via their phone or email to sign up for the project.
Follow the instructions that they provide to you for preparation, for the activity itself, and for the reflection.
Upon satisfactory completion of the project, you will receive a certificate of participation from the project contributor.
The certificate (or letter on official letterhead) will include: Name of Project, Name of Project Contributor (community partner), date of project, nummber of hours earned and curriculum focus. Also, your reflection should be turned in to the project contributor, who will verify the reflection. These two should be attached.
You will need to show this certificate and your reflection to a teacher who can input your service learning hours into Power School to be recorded for graduation requirement purposes.
The project contributor appreciates hearing about what you got out of the project, so as a courtesy, please send them a copy of your reflection.

Project Contributors

Request for a Project Contributor Form by emailing us: guamservicelearning1@gmail.com .
Once you complete the Form, you can email it back to us: guamservicelearning1@gmail.com . Please use Word, or convert to Word. Please don't use all caps.
Staff at the Guam Service Learning website will verify that the project is appropriate and meets all requirements for service learning according to Guam law and Board policy.
Once approved, the project will be posted on the website on the date designated as project start date (which is the earliest date you would like students to view the project).
Students will contact you directly to sign up for the project. You will have their contact info to send them information and reminders.
Please provide them with appropriate permission forms and waivers that include photo and video releases.
Once students fulfill your expectations for the project, you will give them a certificate of participation.
According to the letter from the superintendant found on the link on the right, the certificate (or letter on official letterhead) should include: Name of Project, Name of Community Partner (project contributor), date of project, number of hours earned, and curriculum focus. The student also needs to turn in a reflection to you to be verified by you. The certificate and reflection should be attached for the student to turn in to a teacher who can grant them the hours.
If their teacher has a question about students and their participation, they will contact you.
Once project is ended, it will no longer appear on the website as a possible project but will be moved to Past Projects. If it is a project that repeats the following year or the following semester, you will need to contact website staff and provide new start and end dates for the project

Teachers

You are welcome to post your project on the website for your students to access information and requirements.
If your student participates in a project that they found on the website, they will request that you grant them the hours that they earned. We have an agreement with the Guam Department of Education and the Superintendent. The projects that are posted have been approved in concert with the Service Learning Committee.
Students will provide you with a certificate of participation from the project contributors. They will also provide you with a reflection of their activity.
If it meets with your approval, please input the noted hours into their Power School records. If you have any concerns, please address them with the student, the project contributor, or the website staff, as you deem appropriate.

Parents

Our goal at the Guam Service Learning website is to provide students with many opportunities to choose projects that interest them. We want to encourage them to be responsible for following through with the project from preparation, to activity, to reflection, to asking a teacher to input their hours.
Encourage your child to use the website to choose, sign up for, and follow through with, their service learning projects.
Please read instructions given to students if you need to know about the projects.
