Friends of the Park - Neighborhood Parks

To provide families with a safe place to play and relax, Island Girl Power has adopted neighborhood parks in the Kaiser Dededo area, but needs help maintaining these parks. Students will help to maintain neighborhood parks by grass cutting, pick up and removal of debris, landscaping, and distributing surveys.

Preparation Instruction:
Please fill out the volunteer pledge and volunteer form.
Call to confirm dates, usually occur during breaks and on some Saturdays.
Bring gloves and trash bags, if possible.
Bring lunch and water.
Meet with Project Coordinator for directions on site.
Take volunteer tour and safety briefing at 9:30.

Activity Instruction:
After the tour and safety briefing, proceed to the parks area.
After surveying the area for tasks needed, decide goals for the day. Work diligently on your project, remembering that landscaping is a physical activity. Make sure you keep hydrated.
Take a before and after photo, if possible, and post on social media using the hashtag #guamservicelearning

Reflection Instruction:
In order to earn service learning hours, you will need to turn in a reflection to a teacher. Your reflection should address: What did you do? What did you learn? How was this an example of service to your community? How did I feel about helping to make this neighborhood a safer and more pleasant environment?

Learning Standards/Objectives:
To assist residents in revitalizing abandoned parks and give youth a safe place to play and exercise.
To reinforce the idea of the importance of physical activity.
