Clean-up at 1000 Steps



Disaster at 1000 Steps, Mangilao! March 16, 2019, 7 am to 11 am, clean up the entrance to one of Guam’s most popular local and tourist sites, along with Marine Mania, GCC EcoWarriors, UOG Green Army, Mangilao Mayor’s Office, and Guam Nature Alliance.  

Because our island is small, anything that we do on land can affect the surrounding ocean.  Dumping trash endangers wildlife on land and in the ocean. Plastic items can be eaten by plankton, crabs, fish, turtles, dolphins and whales and can kill them. Plastics can make their way into the food chain and harm humans. Trash is also a health and safety hazard to residents and tourists. It makes our island ugly and it is also illegal. By participating in this event, hopefully you will understand the importance of disposing trash properly, as well as developing stewardship, which is a sense of responsibility and caring for your island.  Part of this activity involves recycling, which contributes to sustainability by using less resources and energy.

Preparation Instruction:
Bring a water bottle. For safety reasons, please wear closed shoes, cool clothing, sunscreen/hat. Gloves, bags, and water will be supplied.   Service learners will need a parent/guardian signature on a Guam Nature Alliance Waiver Form that can be downloaded from https://guamnaturealliance.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/gna-general-and-family-release-and-waiver-of-liability-aug2018.pdf.  Waiver forms will also be provided at 1000 Steps. Directions: From the North, on Rt 15 Mangilao, turn left before the Onward Mangilao Golf course. There is a sign for 1000 Steps.  From the South, on Rt 15 in Mangilao, pass the entrance to the Onward Mangilao Golf Course, turn right at the sign for 1000 Steps.

Activity Instruction:
This is a clean-up activity similar to the Coastal Cleanup. Regular trash and recyclables will be separated and taken to the proper waste and recycling facilities. Recycling contributes to sustainability and uses less resources and energy. This is also a community service to keep our environment safe, healthy and beautiful. 

Reflection Instruction:

In order to earn service learning hours, a reflection needs to be turned in to a teacher who can input the hours into Power School. You need to address: What did you do? What did you learn? How was this an example of public service? Refer to the project desciption above and standards below for what the objectives of the project are.
